about the chicken garden My passion for poultry began with two humble meat chicks which I plucked out of a large intensive brioler shed at the age of sixteen. The farm where I kept my horse grew briolers, and on been invited to have a look at the day olds I was overwelmed by the yellow carpet of pittifull babies, destined for a short and misrable life. The farmer picked out two hens for me, grunting they would probably die as he assumed I didn't no how to look after them. Defiant as ever, I took them home in a bucket and kept them warm under an ordinary table lamp housed in a cardboard box. In their home made brooder the two little chicks thrived and were soon happily free ranging in the garden and ejoying the sunshine, both hens lived for three years and laid eggs too, something else the farmer was wrong about.
Since then Iv reared many more chicks and also kept free range layers on a semi commerchial scale. Today im about where I want to be with poultry, breeding pure breeds and rearing hybrid pullets for garden pets . All my stock is home bred and reared by my self, they grow up in a family enviroment and are used to children and dogs, some not sure if they are chickens or people.
