Free range eggs

THERE ARE FREE RANGE EGGS AND THERE ARE FREE RANGE EGGS.

At the chicken garden I pride myself on quality not quantity. Wheather  it be breeding, pullet rearing or egg producing.
Chickens are not creatures that thrive when kept in mass numbers, naturally they will live in a small group of one cockerel and a few hens.

The average free range egg at the supermarket will come from laying flocks where hens are housed in their thousands, only ten percent of those hens will actually be brave enough to move away from their feeding, watering,  and nesting space and find the great outdoors. The laying house is a vast shed usually with a compleetly slatted floor, scratching pit and roll away nest boxes.
They live for seventy two weeks and are then sent to the hen packers as the  quality of their eggs is not quite good enough for the supermarkets in the second year of laying.
The average life span of a laying hybrid hen if well looked after is about five years.

I have a humble little flock of just a hundred layers. The pullets are reared by myself from day old chicks and are made up of a variety of heritage breeds giving a wonderfull assortment of shell colours, ranging from pure white, cream, brown, dark brown, sky blue, blue /green and olive. The laying house is fully bedded on wood shavings and they have cosy nest boxes deeply bedded in straw and curtains for a bit of privacy when laying their eggs. I have young hens, middle aged and older ladies, pluss a cockerel to keep a happy pecking order.
The hens have a large grass paddock to roam in, and and roam they do from morning till night, they eat good quality layers pellets containing omega 3 oils and of vegetarian ingredients.

So if you cant keep your own hens, but want to enjoy fresh genuine free range eggs in an assortment of shell colours, hand packed eggs from very happy hens, visit the little blue honesty box at the entrance to the Chicken Garden and help yourself.
